Our expertise focuses on the mechanical and micromechanical behaviour of soils and its interaction with structures; improving design methodology and infrastructure longevity for greater resilience.
Our work
Geotechnics is central to understanding how soil, rock, and groundwater interact with infrastructure. We lead pioneering research that supports safer, more resilient, and sustainable construction in complex ground conditions.
Our work combines high-precision laboratory testing, advanced numerical modelling, and real-world field studies to investigate how ground materials behave under stress and environmental change. From the micro-mechanics of soils to large-scale foundation systems, our research spans multiple scales and applications.
We explore a wide range of pressing geotechnical challenges. These include developing more efficient foundation and pile systems, improving soils using recycled and waste materials, and addressing the environmental impacts of contaminated land.
We investigate slope stability and landslide risk in vulnerable areas, study the performance of railway trackbeds under heavy and repeated loading, and develop digital twin models to simulate and monitor the long-term behaviour of ground-structure systems. Our research also focuses on integrating smart sensing technologies into infrastructure to provide real-time insight into geotechnical performance.
We are active in interdisciplinary collaborations, contributing to global efforts in disaster resilience and climate-adaptive infrastructure. By pushing the boundaries of soil and ground-structure knowledge, we help build a safer, smarter, and more sustainable world from the ground up.
