I’m part of the X-ray Phase Contrast Imaging (XPCI) group. I am working on the detection of an ‘X-ray scattering’ signal in biological tissues, and trying to find out whether this signal has any link to scattering of visible light within tissues, so as to make it easier to assess biological tissues non-invasively.

I did my undergraduate degree in Veterinary Medicine at the Royal Veterinary College) and then took an intercalated BSc in Medical Physics at UCL. After qualifying in 2011, and working as an equine veterinary surgeon for three and a half years, I realised that my main clinical interests lied within diagnostic imaging.

I love working in an ever progressing field, especially one that has the potential to positively impact the wider community. I also very much enjoy the cross-disciplinary approach within the department. People from all backgrounds - Physics, Maths, Biomedical Science, and even the occasional vet) are able to collaborate and share ideas and expertise. Everyone’s ideas and skills are nurtured, but support in less familiar areas is always available.

Ultimately, I would like to combine my two spheres of knowledge spheres to improving animal welfare, and helping to advance diagnostic and treatment modalities within the veterinary industry.

I’d advise anyone thinking about studying Medical Physics to speak to those who use the technology - doctors, medical physicists, physiotherapists, dentists for example.You will soon appreciate the breadth of work that this field covers, and realise that you’ll never be bored!
