Our research in photonic systems and integration is advancing high-speed, energy-efficient optical technologies that redefine modern communication and imaging systems.
The department explores cutting-edge opto-electronic devices, from semiconductor lasers to liquid crystal devices, achieving significant breakthroughs in areas such as ultra-fast photonics, THz-over-fiber broadband, and 2D optical systems. Researchers here were the first to integrate telecommunications wavelength lasers directly onto silicon, and we continue to pioneer in areas such as nanowire and quantum dot technologies. Our work with industry partners on innovative optical devices and systems aims to enhance data transmission speeds, device efficiency, and network capacity, laying the groundwork for a new era of high-performance optical communications.
