Inter-connect quantum compute resources via qubit communications utilising entanglement

Inter-connect quantum compute resources via qubit communications utilising entanglement

Funder: British Telecommunications PLC

Lead partner: UCL Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Lead academic: Prof George Zervas

Co-investigators: Dr Alfonso Ruocco

Project amount: £43,500

Research themes: Quantum, Neuromorphic Technologies

Project period: 1 Oct 2024 - 30 Sep 2028

Project description: Leveraged Industry funding as part of the awarded EPSRC Industrial CASE (ICASE) Training Grant (Industrial CASE Account)  The project will explore theoretical and experimental methods to develop optical network systems in order to support distributed quantum compute operations using entanglement. This will include but not be limited to the design of optical switches that provide ultra-low insertion loss and high-speed reconfiguration, network architectures that scale to support a 100s-1000s of termination points (quantum processing units) and understand the network impact on fidelity, decoherence, and effective quantum computation. The focus of the project will be determined with the PhD student during the first 6 months of the programme.
