Doctorate in Educational and Child Psychology Alumni

Dr Gemma Costello's profile (DECPsy 2006-2009)

Dr Gemma Costello

What is your current role?
I am Lead Educational Psychologist of The Children's Trust, Tadworth Court

What did you find particularly useful about the Doctorate in Educational & Child Psychology programme at UCL?
Training as an EP at UCL meant that I was ready to hit the ground running when I started my career at Surrey Local Authority. It gave me confidence to establish a role as an EP that was grounded in a clear evidence base but communicated this in a manner that was accessible to all. It has allowed me to work collaboratively with and establish strong partnerships with other agencies, setting clear expectations about the EP role and our skills.

How has doing the DECPsy at UCL developed your CPD / career?
My training has given me a strong foundation in Educational Psychology and encouraged me to explore the possibilities of our role. This led me to develop my skills, specialising in acquired brain injury and continuing my training in paediatric neuropsychology. I have a strong commitment to thinking about how we apply Educational Psychology practice to meet the needs of this group of young people and their families, at a time in their lives which has brought new challenges and altered developmental and psychosocial trajectories. This is a role not only for specialist services but for all who support young people in their transition to home and school.
