Aims:
The Research Methods course is a core course of the MSc in Economics programme. The course is designed to lay the foundations for research in economics or for work as a professional economist. The course covers different aspects of the research toolbox of modern economists. The Research Methods course is organised in three modules: Mathematics and Statistics, Academic Skills for Economists and Empirical Econometric Skills. The aim of these modules is to introduce or review the tools students need in order to master the material presented in the taught part of the MSc in Economics programme on the one hand and to enable progress towards independent research for the dissertation and for work as a professional economist on the other hand.
Structure of the Research Methods course:
- Mathematics and Statistics: matrix algebra, real analysis, optimisation, probability, statistics.
- Academic Skills for Economists
- Empirical Econometric Skills

| Assessment: | An online Maths and Stats exam in the first week of the programme, the marks for which count toward the MSc award. For those who fail the exam at the first attempt, the re-sit exam will take place in the following Late Summer Assessment exams period. Academic skills and Empirical Econometric skills for economists are assessed in the dissertation. |
