Our financial world has become more complex than ever before and many lack a clear understanding of how financial markets work. During this presentation Dr Al-Bahrani provides a summary of the research focusing on financial literacy and financial outcomes. The discussion will include information on how current students can participate and contribute to research in this area. He will also discuss examples of efforts by private firms, governments and educational institutions to increase financial literacy.
Dr Abdullah Al-Bahrani is the Director of the Center for Economic Education and an Associate Professor of Economics at Northern Kentucky University (NKU). He has published research on a wide range of economic issues including competition in online markets and racial differences in financial literacy. His research also extends into the field of pedagogy where he has looked at innovative topics such as leveraging augmented reality to teach economics.
Dr Al-Bahrani is the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching and Instruction award and the Dean’s Citation award. Recently, he was selected by Kentucky Treasurer Allison Ball to serve on the Kentucky Financial Empowerment Commission. He is a strong advocate for efforts to increase diversity, inclusion and belonging in the realm of higher education.
