Entry Requirements and Funding

Entry Requirements

A minimum upper second-class Honours in Economics with a significant quantitative component, or equivalent. Applicants with a very good Bachelor's degree in another quantitative discipline, such as mathematics, statistics, or physics, will also be considered. Degrees in Business Studies, Business Administration or Accounting are not appropriate preparation for the considerable quantitative demands of this degree.

Applicants should demonstrate that they:

  • Are comfortable with academically rigorous content
  • Enjoy technical challenges in the discipline
  • Have an aptitude for applying sophisticated technical tools to topical questions in Economics

Graduate Record Examinations (GRE)

If you undertook your undergraduate degree at a university outside the United Kingdom (UK) you'll need to take the GRE Test before applying to the programme. The quantitative GRE score must be at least 162 (post-August 2011 scores). Upload a copy of your GRE score report with your online application for admission.

English Language Requirements

If your education has not been conducted in the English language, you will be expected to demonstrate evidence of an adequate level of English proficiency at UCL's Level 2 before the start of the programme and preferably at the point of application.

Pre-sessional

All incoming MSc Economics students must complete an online Maths & Stats course during the summer before starting the MSc programme. You should be proficient with matrix algebra, multi-variate calculus and optimisation techniques before embarking on the MSc.

Fees and Funding

Many students on our degree fund their studies from family sponsorship, employer sponsorship, home country scholarships, and career development loans.

In addition, some UCL funding is available to encourage exceptionally strong applicants.

Funding

See the Graduate Scholarships section of the UCL Prospective Students website for information on UCL sources of funding for the MSc year. All MSc offer-holders should periodically review this list of UCL Graduate Scholarships and apply for all UCL funding for which they are eligible by following the directions on the UCL Graduate Scholarships website.
