Why Periodontology?

Periodontitis (gum disease) is considered one of the most common inflammatory diseases worldwide. In the UK alone, 45% of the population suffer from some form of periodontitis and 10% have severe generalised forms.

Specialising in Periodontology affords dentists the opportunity to help very many patients and, potentially, positively impact wider health since emerging evidence links periodontitis to other chronic health conditions.

Why Eastman?

The art and science of clinical periodontology is closely linked with basic science in the daily efforts of our Periodontology unit, with the periodontal health of our patients as our core objective. Our members emphasise teamwork among academic staff, clinical staff, graduates and administrative staff. The team also carry out internationally recognised research, often contributing to the evolution of the discipline and influencing national healthcare guidance

The MClinDent is accredited by the European Federation of Periodontology and the UK Specialist Advisory Committee. It is delivered through seminars, tutorials, individual and small group teaching, self-directed learning, and practical clinical and experiential learning, with maximum exposure to clinical methodologies and management of patients with periodontal diseases.

Graduates of this programme have joined or started dental practices in the UK, EU and overseas working in the field of periodontics and implant dentistry. Some have continued their career by following clinically-related PhD programmes and have been appointed in academic positions in dental schools in the UK and overseas. A number of international graduates have received prestigious governmental positions in their countries.

The MSc offers working GDPs an opportunity to acquire intensive knowledge of the principles of periodontal and peri-implant diseases. The online delivery is particularly suited to dentists who need flexibility in their learning pattern or are geographically distant from the Institute. This is designed to engage participants in an inclusive and stimulating learning experience without the need to be on-campus regularly.
