Frequently asked questions

Before applying

When can I apply?
Most of our programmes open for applications from mid-October (the year before the programme commences) until the following January. Exact application dates are published on course pages found via our Study section

What are the entrance requirements?
Entrance requirements for programmes can be found on the respective course pages which you can access via our Study section.

What are the English Language requirements on your programmes?
Due to the demanding nature of our programmes we require successful applicants to possess at least a “Good” standard of English which is a higher-standard than that required by many other programmes. Please familiarise yourself with what score you would need to achieve on a number of accepted English Language tests on the UCL website.

Do I need a visa to study?
As this is a complex area please seek the specialist advice of UCL's dedicated team.

What fees will I pay? Will I be classified as an overseas or UK/EU fee paying student?
UCL is only able to give you confirmation of the fee you will be charged once it has received and reviewed your application. Any advice given before this point is general and non-binding. View the fees charged for programmes.

After Applying

When will I hear about the outcome of my application?
Applications are typically assessed after the closing date for applications as published on the course website. Please see individual course application deadline dates via our Study section. It may take up to three months after the closing date for a decision to be relayed to you. We therefore ask applicants to exercise patience during this time and to regularly check the e-mail account associated with their application for updates.

There is an issue with my application / logging into the application portal / I need to update my application
Please refer any issues regarding your application and/or access to the application portal to the Graduate Admissions Office in the first instance If you have been asked to provide documentation in support of your application, please email this to edi-admissions@ucl.ac.uk clearly stating your applicant/student number within the e-mail.

I would like to apply but the application deadline has passed
Unfortunately, we cannot accept late applications after the published application deadline date. You are encouraged to apply for the next intake of the course in the following year – applications generally open again in mid-October.

I would like to change my reference details
You can amend your referee details on the UCL Applicant Portal if the referee has not yet provided a reference. If the referee has since provided a reference then please contact the Graduate Admissions Office. Please note that we cannot accept references sent from anyone except the referee themselves from their contact details as stated on your application form. We cannot accept references forwarded on by applicants.

My application has been rejected. Why?
Due to the high number of applications and the limited spaces we have on our programmes we do have to turn down several applications every year. This can be due to several reasons however we are not able to discuss reasons for an unsuccessful application with applicants as this is not permitted under UCL policy.

Do I get a refund of my application fee if I’m rejected?
You would not normally be entitled to a refund of your application fee if your application was unsuccessful. There may be circumstances where a refund may be permitted but these would be based on exceptional circumstances beyond your control and with agreement from UCL. You are encouraged to contact the Graduate Admissions Office in the first instance to discuss this.

Can I apply again?
Yes. You are welcome to re-apply for courses if you have been unsuccessful in previous years.
