We were delighted to welcome five UCL Eastman graduates back to the Institute yesterday to address current students at our inaugural Alumni Speakers event.

Professor Hesham Kahlil gained MSc in Maxillofacial Surgery in 2005 from Eastman followed by a PhD, awarded in 2008. He then returned to King Saud University as a senior registrar, rising to full professor at King Saud University and Dar Aluloom University in Saudi Arabia in 2015.

He is the founder of the College of Dentistry in Sattam bin Abdualziz University, the College of Medicine and the College of Dentistry in Dar Aluloom University.

Dallas Roulston is in the process of submitting his PhD thesis whilst working as a Lecturer at Middlesex University. Mr Roulston spoke about the importance of gaining teaching experience early on.

Dr Jonathan Pratten completed his PhD at Eastman in 2002, before becoming a Lecturer and then Senior Lecturer until 2011. Dr Pratten now holds the role of Innovation Director in Oral Health at GlaxoSmithKline. His talk focused on his transition from academia to industry.

Recent graduate Dr Vanessa Sousa Moreno reflected on the resources and experiences which were useful during the completion of her PhD and how to gain independence after your doctorate. Dr Sousa Moreno is now an Academic Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Specialty Registrar in Periodontology at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Finally Dr Derren Ready, Head of the Respiratory and Systemic Bacteria Section at Public Health England, spoke about his work in infection prevention and control – including monitoring Ebola symptoms in medical professionals - and his work in public engagement.

We would like to extend our gratitude to these inspirational alumni and thank them for sharing their experiences with us during this very motivational morning.
