This one-day course will provide an update on the safety aspects of removal of injured athletes from the field of play, with emphasis on head injuries and the role that sports dentists can play.
Course content
This is a one-day course for sports dentists and sports medicine personnel who are, or would like to be, involved with athletes both in the professional and amateur sporting environments.
The course will be both theoretical and practical, with delegates having the opportunity to try up-to-date skills in a simulated scenario basis.
The day will also provide ample opportunity for interaction between sports medicine and sports dentistry professionals and enhance the close working relationship between the two.
Aims and objectives
This course aims to provide:
- up-to-date information on research into oral health and elite athletes
- information on current protocols for dealing with concussion in sport
- skills and knowledge about safe removal of an injured athlete from the field of play

On finishing the course you should have more confidence in:
- incorporating current research into your day-to-day practice with athletes
- understanding current concussion protocols and implementing them
- gaining practical experience in safe removal of an injured athlete from the field of play

The day will run from 9:30am - 5pm at the Institute of Sport Exercise and Health.
The teaching will be a mixture of didactic, lecture-based presentations and hands-on scenarios, simulating real life situation.

This course is lead by Dr Peter Fine, a Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow at UCL Eastman Dental Institute who is responsible for running the Sports Dentistry CPD course at UCL EDI. He also supervises Masters students during their research year, resulting in them delivering the masters dissertation.
