PhD project in Seismology

We seek a highly motivated PhD student for a fully-funded position in seismology at the Department of Earth Sciences, University College London, UK. The student will work on the ERC-funded project UPFLOW. The project is aimed to advance cutting-edge seismic tomography imaging at global and regional scales combining land and seafloor seismic data. The work will include collaboration with the UPFLOW project collaborators, notably with Dr. Michael Witek (Korea University) and with Prof. Sung-Joon Chang (Changwon University, S. Korea). Moreover, novel machine learning approaches will also be explored for the processing and analysis of both land and ocean bottom seismometer data.

The student will ideally have a degree in geophysics or physics with a strong mathematics and programming background. The project includes participation in UPFLOW's unprecedented marine seismology expedition in the Azores-Madeira-Canary islands region, high performance computing, and teaching or outreach activities if of interest to the student.

Due to funding restrictions, the PhD position is only open to students with a UK home fee status and will start in October 2022. It is funded for 3.5 years and includes a full studentship including tuition fees and an annual stipend.

The successful applicant will be joining an exciting department with a very strong record in deep Earth studies including seismologists, rock physicists, mineral physics and geodynamicists with interests in various aspects of global and regional geophysical problems at UCL.

Please send your CV with contact information for 2 references, and a two-page cover letter with research interests to Prof. Ana Ferreira (A.Ferreira@ucl.ac.uk) and also follow the formal UCL application process (link below).

Please get in touch with any questions about the project or the position.

Application deadline: this position will remain open until it will be filled.
