Discover Earth Sciences is a live lecture series that highlights the fascinating and diverse world of Earth science.

Geochronology Lab at UCL

The aim of this lecture series is to showcase how maths, chemistry, physics, geography and biology can all link to the many different facets of Earth science. The lectures are being held on Zoom, and we were very lucky to have Prof. Pieter Vermeesch kick off the lecture series on his geochronology talk entitled, ‘How to date rocks with radiogenic isotopes’.

Pieter’s talk took us on a journey through Earth’s timeline and revealed how (1) the uranium-lead (U-Pb) method was used to estimate the age of the Solar System (4.57 billion years), (2) the potassium-argon (K-Ar) method was used to date the extinction of the dinosaurs, and (3) the fission track method was used to estimate the vertical growth rate of the Himalaya.
