Departmental Alumni Careers Forum:

Once a year we invite our Alumni to learn first-hand about their career journeys and share their top tips and advice on how to make succesful applications. At the forum we also discuss the current employment market and emerging trends as well as chat about how to navigate and manage your career path. 

Alumni Spotlight profiles:

Jose Canizares, class of 2016 - MSc in Geophysical Hazards

Jose is a Catastrophe Risk Analyst for MAPFRE RE with over 5 years of professional experience in London and Madrid. He is a Natural Hazards passionate and enjoys using his knowledge and skills to support MAPFRE RE evolution. He graduated from the University of Alicante in 2014 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography and he gained his MSc in Geophysical Hazards in 2016 from UCL. LinkedIn

Richard Thomas: class of 2016 - MSc in Geophysical Hazards

Richard studied his undergraduate degree in Geology at the University of Exeter finishing in 2012. He then went to work in geochemical exploration in Russia, India, Mongolia, the UK and Ireland, leaving to start his MSc at UCL in 2015. On finishing, Richard returned to work in Russia on an exploration project, and then began a PhD project at the University of Oxford in 2017, looking at the thermodynamic properties of halogens in silicate melts. LinkedIn

Cristiano Fortuna, class of 2018 - Msci Environmental Geoscience

Cristiano's Master's specialism at UCL focussed on the chemical analysis of cave speleothems, using stable isotope mass spectroscopy, petrography and fluorescent microscopy. After graduation, he secured a job at the Environment Agency in the Hertfordshire and North London office where he started in the Flood Resilience Team. He stayed there for a little over a year before moving to his current position as a Flood Risk Officer for Telford & Wrekin Council in Shropshire. LinkedIn

Simran Johal, class of 2019 - MSc Engineering Geology

After finishing her Bachelors in Earth Sciences at UCL, Simran studied her Masters in Engineering Geology at ETH Zurich which she completed in 2021. Recently, Simran completed an internship as a Geothermal Geologist at an energy R&D company, Geo-Energie Suisse, within its Bedretto Underground Lab research infrastructure. LinkedIn
