UCL’s Festival of Culture returns this year with a packed programme of guided walks, talks, exhibitions, workshops, screenings, and our newly introduced Festival Book Club.
Below are a selection of the events on offer, focusing on those related to the early modern period:
Tuesday 6th June
- Plague and Pestilence: Today, we are constantly under threat from outbreaks of epidemic disease, most recently Ebola and Zika virus. But, how did medieval people respond to disease, and what was medieval plague all about?
- Treasures of the Written Word: A rare opportunity to view highlights from UCL Special Collections, Archives and Records, including selections of Medieval and Renaissance books
Wednesday 7th June
- Maternity in the Age of Shakespeare: Surprising differences will be revealed between the understanding of maternity in Shakespeare’s time and our own.
- Martin Luther: Catholic Dissident: Considering Martin Luther’s extraordinary impact on western civilisation.
Thursday 8th June
- Flashpoints: the Making and Melting of Gold in Art: Research on the pictorial crafting of gold and on the meltdown and reformation of precious metalwork in 15th- and 16th-century Europe
- The 400 Year Old Shopping List: A shopping list from 1633, and what insight it gives us into the way in which wealthy households were managed in 17th century England.
- Shakespeare Through the Seasons: vocal recitals and readings - with piano accompaniment - of Shakespearian musings on winter, summer, spring and love.
Friday 9th June
Metamorphosis: Monsters, Beasts and Humans: Medieval and modern tales and images of humans, animals and metamorphosis
