Masterclass: Assessment and management of balance disorders in children – Oct 2020 TBC

A three day instructional course, organised by UCL in partnership with St George’s University Hospitals.

Overview

This three day masterclass will cover current trends in paediatric dizziness.

You'll develop clinical skills in the assessment, diagnosis, testing and rehabilitation of children with dizziness and balance problems.

You’ll also have an opportunity to network with a range of professionals from different backgrounds.

You can attend for one, two or three days.

Course content

The course aims to:

  • foster the knowledge and skills required in the assessment and management of children with dizziness / balance problems

You'll learn about:

  • functional anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system
  • development of normal balance function in children
  • peripheral and central causes of dizziness in children
  • patient and parent centred inteview
  • clinical test of vestibular function (with workshops)
  • VHIT and VEMPS (through workshops)
  • migraine related vestibular disorders in children
  • neurologist's approach to the dizzy child
  • role and value of non-audiological tests - neurology, radiology, blood tests, ECG
  • medical management of the dizzy child
  • vestibular rehabilitation in children including cases
  • visually induced dizziness in children (including machine based rehabilitation, OKN desensitisation & paediatric vestibular symptom scale)
  • vestibular rehabilitation outcome measures.

Teaching and structure

The course is run by a multidisciplinary faculty consisting of clinicians and scientists who are highly experienced in setting up and running paediatric “dizzy clinics” and involves:

  • live lectures
  • interactive seminar style discussions
  • workshops 
  • online virtual learning environment with pre course reading, handouts and resources, video recordings and quizzes
