In2STEM
We are delighted to be welcoming another group of students to the Ear Institute from 19-23 August 2024 as part of the In2STEM programme. As part of the placement students will be learning about hearing science from a series of different perspectives. These include genetics of hearing and deafness, development of the hearing system, molecular, microscopy and computational tools used to investigate hearing, and psycho-physics studies on the mechanics of human sound perception.
In2STEM (formerly the In2science summer programme) is a fantastic opportunity for 16-19-year-olds (Year 12 or S5/S6) passionate about STEM. Running from July 22 to August 23 2024, the programme offers a blend of online and in-person activities, equipping participants with the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to excel in STEM. The programme is free for students to join and a bursary is provided by In2Science to cover travel and lunch expenses during the placement.
The placement is organised by Carlos Aguilar Hernandez, who is also supporting the mentoring programme that In2Science run as part of In2Careers. Carlos was nominated for Host of the Week as part of the 2023 programme. His nominator noted:
"Carlos Aguilar has gone above and beyond. He has been very enthusiastic, motivating and informative. He has been very welcoming and showed us all around the very impressive building. He has shown us his passion in his area of interest in Biology and I found that very interesting. I have learnt so much about hearing and balance at this placement. I have really enjoyed listening to very informative presentations. He has also taught me about Universities in general and courses. My favourite part of the placement was watching demonstrations and carrying out exciting practicals and learning new laboratory skills, that will be very useful for the future. He has arranged such a wide variety of different activities during this placement, which gave me experience in different areas of Science. This was all because of my Host, as he organised such an amazing week. I am very grateful that I did this placement and that I had such a great host!"
