Julius Vuylsteke:
Vuylsteke, Julius P. (Gent 1836 – Gent 1903). Barrister, city-councillor in Gent, book dealer and general secretary and later chairman of the Willems Foundation (1862-1895). He was instrumental in bringing this Flamingant cultural association – originally a non-partisan association – into the orbit of the Liberal party and turning it into the liberal counterpart of the Catholic David Foundation set up in 1875. An anticlerical Liberal as well as a Flamingant, Vuylsteke also wanted the Liberal party to adopt a more sympathetic attitude to the Flemish cause.
