During the campaign for language legislation dealing with Catholic secondary education Catholic Flemish militants openly rebelled against the King, the Catholic government and the Church hierarchy who played a significant guiding role in the Catholic party. In 1907 they approached the opposition parties, with the aim of creating a common front between Flemish sympathizers from all political parties in order to pilot a bill through Parliament. Next, a non-party-political, common campaign got underway for the conversion of gent University to Dutch. In 1911, Flamingant figure-heads from the three political parties – Frans van Cauwelaert; Camille Huysmans, a Socialist MP; and Louis Franck, a Liberal MP – introduced a bill relating to this matter, yet it was only taken into consideration after the First World War.
