Flemish Liberals and Socialists:
with the introduction of proportional representation in 1899, the Catholic party lost a number of parliamentary seats in Flanders to the Liberal and Socialist parties. The result was that, for the first time, all three parties had representatives in Parliament from each of the two parts of the country. The Catholic parliamentary majority dropped from 112 in 1898 to 86 in 1900. Both other parties combined gathered 66 seats in 1900 as opposed to only 40 in 1898.
