>In modern Dutch spelling

As Roemer Visscher himself states, the >meaning of this Sinnepop is so immediately clear that it does not need a long explanation, even though in the subscriptio, the item depicted in the pictura and the entire inscriptio >"Een vol vat en bomt niet" are not explicitly referred to. The pictura is vintage Visscher, depicting another hand from a cloud, and a single, commonly used object. The purpose must of course have been to put a dent in the mind of readers, who were supposed to remember Visscher`s moralistic puns each time they saw a barrel.

"Een vol vat en bomt niet" resembles a well-known Dutch saying. For more Dutch proverbs in Sinnepoppen, >click here.

Roemer Visscher`s iconographic use of the barrel can also be seen in the painting >`Bubble blowers` (around 1660?) by Esaias Boursse. >Compare the two images.
