Even though this term in not used in English in this context, it is constantly used in the Dutch discourse on immigrants and immigration, which is why we have chosen to use it here to give you a ‘taste’ of the local way of talking about these issues.

literally: from another country, person of foreign origin, mostly used for non-Western (read: other coloured) foreigners, in contrast with ‘autochtonous’, meaning: original inhabitant, literally: (born) in the same country.
