The tourist site describes the market as a major tourist attraction. A wide variety of goods are for sale at competitive prices. Not only is the market pictured as attractive, so is its neighbourhood with its ‘many pleasant cafés and small shops’.

The story by Geert Mak, however, paints a picture of poverty, survival of the fittest, filth, decay, coarseness, and generally the seamy side of life on the fringes of society. All but a place where tourists want to go.
