The image of a young girl looking back from a train is one of the iconic images of the Holocaust. She appears for seven seconds on a film of a transport out of the Dutch concentration camp Westerbork bound for Auschwitz. Aad Wagenaar, a Dutch journalist, decided to discover the identity of this girl, whose image had haunted him all his life. Settela, the name of the girl, is also the title of the book he wrote about this investigation.

The book has now come out in English translation and is published by Five Leaves Publications in Nottingham (ISBN 0907123708). Copies of the book will be available at the UCL presentation on 23 November.

To introduce his book, Aad Wagenaar will give a short lecture and bring the original film fragment that started his inquiry as well as the documentary film he made about this girl for Dutch TV.

This event is open and free. It should be of interest in particular to students of Dutch, Film, Holocaust Studies, Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature.

Wednesday 23 November 2005 at 12.15, Lecture Theatre G-06 of the UCL Department of Geography, 26 Bedford Way (off Tavistock Square).
