Public engagement workshop programme at the Wallace Collection

13 July 2012

Wallace Collection VOC

This summer Stefanie van Gemert (Comparative Literature PhD student and Teaching Assistant at the Dutch department) is running four workshops at the Wallace Collection and the UCL Art Museum on Dutch seventeenth-century art and the history of the Dutch East India Company.

The four workshops are part of the Wallace Collection’s year-long Treasures from the East programme. During the workshops Stefanie discusses objects from the UCL Art Museum and UCL Special Collections with London community groups; the participants will take a close-up look at seventeenth-century prints and rare books that are normally not on display.

Stefanie received a UCL Step Out grant for the partnership initiative at the Wallace Collection. This grant awards UCL students who step out and connect their research to the wider community, outside UCL.

Whilst researching the workshops’ content, Stefanie happened to come across a charter from 1674 at UCL’s Special Collections, signed on behalf of the Dutch Stadholder William III (who later would become King William of England). This old manuscript was transcribed and integrated into the workshop sessions.

If you would like to learn more about this project, you can follow Stefanie’s postings on the Wallace Collection’s project blog. Or email s.gemert@ucl.ac.uk.
