Alison Hicks

I joined the department in 2017 as a Lecturer in Library and Information Science (LIS) where I teach on the core modules, INST0016 Supporting Users and INST0026 Library and Information Professional and the optional module: INST0054 Information Literacy. In 2019, I was appointed the Programme Director of Library and Information Science. I organise LIS placements and also serve as the departmental careers tutor.

I have previously worked as an adjunct instructor at the University of Denver, as well as an academic librarian at the University of Colorado, Boulder; the Inter-American Development Bank, and the Universidad Torcuato di Tella, amongst other institutions.

My research and professional interests lie in the areas of information literacy, information practices as well as in various aspects of academic librarianship. I was appointed as Editor in Chief of the Journal of Information Literacy in 2020.

I completed my PhD at the Swedish School of Library and Information Science in 2018 under the supervision of Professor Annemaree Lloyd and Dr Ola Pilerot. My PhD research focused on exploring the transitional information literacy practices of students who are learning a language abroad.

I have published a number of articles in international journals such as the Journal of Information Science (JIS), Journal of Librarianship and Information Science (JoLIS); Library and Information Science Research (LISR), portal: Libraries and the academy and the Journal of Information Literacy (JIL). My work is almost entirely available in Open Access format from my personal web page, which can be found at http://alisonhicks.weebly.com/
