Canopic jar lid

This is the carved and painted limestone lid of a set of four canopic jars which would have held the internal organs of the deceased, removed during the mummification process.

By zooming in on the serene face,  the dramatically outlined eyes become clear, emulating the use of kohl on the living. The lines of the striated wig are also drawn in black but the lack of any other colouring, except for the red tie around the hair, this suggests that this lid is unfinished.

If you turn the head fully around you can see the red tie at the back knotted in a bow to adorn the hair.
