The UCLDH Events Newsletter runs on UCL's Mailman install. Mailman lists are often 'discuss' lists, but we've tied this one down to be 'announce' only in accordance with this tutorial. List subscribers don't get to post to this list.
By default, Mailman produces a list info page for every mailing list. We've blanked the UCLDH Events Newsletter list info page and set up a page of our own. That's because Mailman's native pages are fugly and hard to customise.
Note that we did not delete the page altogether -- the default list info page is simply commented out. You can get it back using the Mailman admin interface. Just remove the comment brackets and you'll get it back.
Mailman has two interfaces: web and email. By blanking out the web interface of the list info page we removed the subscribers' access to the web interface: they can't log in to the list manager and tweak their preferences now.
This leaves the email interface intact, however, and we've stated the subscription/ unsubscription email commands via email on the new info page.
Note also that I've tweaked the message footer: every message now goes out
with a footer that says, quoting from memory:
---------------
This message reached you through the UCLDH Events Newsletter:
http://www.ucl.ac.uk/dh/events/newsletter
The text of this footer can be tweaked in the Mailman config as well, as
you see fit.
Also: the welcome message to new subscribers and the farewell message to
new unsubscribers can be tweaked via the Mailman admin interface. I
haven't touched those. Maybe you should customise them and make sure they
contain a link to the actual Silva page rather than the defunct Mailman
list info page.
Later,
Rudolf
