Did you know this year is 40 years since the first BSL research workshop in Newcastle? The first workshop on British Sign Language was held on 11-13 May 1979 and resulted in the publication of a volume "Coding British Sign Language.
 
With the British Deaf Association and Heriot-Watt University, DCAL is organising a one-day event that has been supported by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) as a part of the Festival of Social Sciences.
 
Current and previous BSL researchers will give presentations in BSL on the impact BSL research has had on the British deaf community, and this event will have STTR and BSL interpreters.

There will be a celebratory dinner the night before on Friday 8th November 2019 at UCL.

10:30am - Session 2: Presentation: Reflections on 40 years of BSL research: what have been the major milestone: Professor Bencie Woll

11:15am - Morning Tea

11:30am - Session 3: Presentation: Reflections on the impact of 40 years of BSL research on the British Deaf Community

12:15pm - Session 4: Panel discussion: How have other fields been influenced by BSL research: well being, media, theatre and sign language interpreting and translation: Facilitated by Professor Jemina Napier 

1:00pm - Lunch

2:00pm - Session 5: Presentation: British Sign Language teaching - what have been the changes in further education and higher education? 

2:45pm - Afternoon tea

3:00pm - Session 6: Panel: The way ahead - where is BSL research going? Facilitated by Dr Robert Adam
