Cyber security is subjective, contextual, contested, and fast changing. This makes making a difference with research difficult. There are several cultural and structural differences between academic and industrial research. Using examples and insights from my experience to highlight those differences, I will argue for changes needed and suggest directions to make the cyber security research community more effective.
