Cyber security is subjective, contextual, contested, and fast changing. This makes making a difference with research difficult. There are several cultural and structural differences between academic and industrial research. Using examples and insights from my experience to highlight those differences, I will argue for changes needed and suggest directions to make the cyber security research community more effective.

About the Speaker

Simon Shiu

Simon Shiu

I completed a PhD in computer science in 1996 and then joined HP Labs as a member of technical staff and spent over 28 years in industrial research. For the last 10 years I was Director and then VP of the HP Security Lab, managing an organisation that has a strong track record of industry leading impact in endpoint security innovation.I am currently leaning into my honorary role as visiting professor of cyber security at Bristol University and as a board advisor for the research institute in sociotechnical cybersecurity (RISCS - Research Institute for Sociotechnical Cyber Security).
