UCL East

UCL East represents the largest ever single expansion of UCL since the University was founded nearly 200 years ago. It will be a new UCL campus, complementing the Bloomsbury campus, and will be located on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, to the south of the Aquatics Centre and the ArcelorMittal Orbit.

UCL East is envisaged as a radical new model for how a university campus can be embedded in the community, providing world-leading research, education, entrepreneurship and innovation. UCL East will undeniably be part of UCL’s DNA, building on and embodying its position as London’s global university. But it will also be original in its scope, reach and connections with the local community, the urban surroundings and the Olympic Park. It will be a place for new activities and initiatives at UCL, nurturing creativity and supporting interaction between disciplines.

UCL East will play a central role in the sustainable development of the local area. It will integrate with the waterside, canals and green spaces, bringing the park and the Lee Valley directly into learning and research spaces and experiences. The programme also seeks to be genuinely sustainable, and resilient to future climatic and energy supply uncertainties.

There will be academic buildings across the site, complemented with predominantly student accommodation. The programme is being rolled out in a series of phases. The first phase is expected to have up to 3,000 students and 625 staff, including academics and researchers, on site alongside other users and visitors.
