A condition survey of the Noel Collection

Another example of the importance of conservation

A conservation condition survey of the Noel Collection, a set of 37 plaster life and death masks, was undertaken in Term I. The survey revealed 16 death masks are in poor condition due to unstable, flaking surfaces. Conservation treatment trials to address flaking problem have been completed and the mask awaiting interventive treatment from January 2016, which will be completed by our conservation intern, Dae Young Yoo.

A special carrying case for Noel heads will also be designed and created in the New Year. Masks from the Noel collection are in high demand for teaching purposes and therefore need to be moved from storage north of Euston Road to the Bloomsbury campus.  The carrying case will enable safe transit.
