Why did the Roman Empire poets mostly compliment men for how handsome and strong they looked?

Why did they not compliment women in the same way? Were they homosexuals? How would that be viewed in this time?

I guess this depends on which Roman poets you mean and which passages from poems you have in mind. For example, Roman love poets like Catullus, Tibullus, Propertius and Ovid tend to have specific women (some of them are named like Lesbia or Delia) as the subject of their poems and their adoration.

This does not necessarily mean that they do not praise or fall in love with men and we have some examples of homoerotic adoration as well. The term "homosexuality" is a very recent one. Sexual relations were quite different back then and were based on power dynamics.

The way in which this was received at the time depended a lot on the social category in which that person belonged. For example, male Roman citizens and their wives had more flexibility, power and choice than say male or female slaves.
