Podcast booths

Podcast booths offer easy, DIY audio recording with professional equipment for staff and students

What is a Podcast booth?

A Podcast booth is a dedicated recording space equipped with professional audio recording equipment. Designed for UCL staff and students, the booths allow you to create high-quality podcasts and voiceovers without requiring specialist skills.

Each booth is equipped with:

  • RØDECaster Pro audio recording console
  • High-quality microphones
  • Headphones for podcast host

You simply adjust the microphones and press Record. The goal is to make professional podcasting as accessible and simple as possible.

Who can use the Podcast booth?

  • Any UCL staff member who needs to create high-quality audio content for educational, research, or communications purposes.
  • Students who are required to record a podcast as part of their coursework or assessment.

Where are the Podcast booths located?

There are currently three Podcast booths:

  • Podcast Booth 1, UCL South Wing (for up to 3 people)
  • Podcast Booths 2 and 3, UCL Institute of Education (for two people – not yet fully commissioned)

How do I book a Podcast booth slot?

  • Induction: All first-time users must complete a one-to-one induction session to ensure confidence with the equipment and access procedures.
  • Request Access: Please email video@ucl.ac.uk to arrange your recording session.
  • Cancellations: Please give us at least 24 hours' notice if you wish to cancel or rearrange your booking.

What times are the Podcast booths available?

Slots will be available Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, though availability may vary by location.

How do I use a Podcast booth?

The principle behind the Podcast booths is that they are user-operated ('DIY') units, designed for ease of use. You will learn everything needed to get up and running with the Podcast booth in your induction session.

  1. Arrive: Please arrive at your allotted time with your script, notes, and a laptop or tablet.
  2. Power On: Switch on the RØDECaster using the red button at the back of the device.
  3. Setup: Set the sound levels by wearing headphones and adjusting the fader for each microphone in use.
  4. Record: Press the dedicated Record button on the RØDECaster.
  5. Save: When finished, press Record once more and transfer your files directly to your laptop or tablet.

Additionally, there are instructions on how to set up and use the RØDECaster in the room. You can also watch the instructional video 'How to Get Started With The RØDECaster Pro' by RØDE.

Is there anything I need to bring with me?

To transfer your recordings from the RØDECaster, you will need a laptop or tablet. Use the USB A or USB C cable to connect to your device. Place the RØDECaster into transfer mode and copy your recorded files.
