SCCI academics share expertise with local residents in Cultural Producers Programme
7 May 2025
Twelve Cultural Producers on the Programme took part in four workshops at the UCL East campus exploring sound recording, filming and editing, and podcasting.

The Cultural Producers Programme, run by Creative Newham, offers paid in-depth training and development to help residents aged 18-30 from the borough enter the arts, heritage, health or environment sectors as a producer.
Academics from the School for Creative and Cultural Industries (SCCI) who teach on its postgraduate programmes, ran four in-depth workshops over four days, sharing their expertise and practical skills with participants. The workshops were:
- Immersive Sound & Field Recording with Angela McArthur (Lecturer, Designing Audio Experiences: Art, Science and Production MA)
- Filming Encounters on the Greenway and Editing Greenway Video Portraits with Dieter Deswarte (Lecturer, Ethnographic and Documentary Film)
- Podcasting the Greenway with Athar Ahmad (Lecturer, Audio Storytelling for Radio and Podcast MA)
Participants who took part spent a full day exploring each creative strand, through a mix of fieldwork in the local area, as well as hands on technical work at the UCL East campus. They were given access to SCCI’s specialist spaces such as the Black Box (a state-of-the-art media prototyping space) and media rooms with the latest technical software.
Angela McArthur, who led the Immersive Sound and Field Recording sessions said:
“The young cultural producers were engaged from the outset, and their diverse interests and experience led to some fascinating conversations. They took to the practice and ideas of sound, recording and listening with curiosity and commitment. What a great day!”
Athar Ahmad, who ran Podcasting the Greenway added:
“The Cultural Producers brought energy, curiosity and their own unique perspectives over all four days of the programme, engaging with us to develop their practice further. I look forward to seeing what this exciting group of creative practitioners go on to produce next”
