About this event
The School for the Creative and Cultural Industries is delighted to present the latest screening of the SCCI Cinema Club. Taking place at the One Pool Street Cinema at UCL East, we will be hosting a series of free screenings, sharing the films that have inspired and influenced researchers, artists, and practitioners across our creative community.
Thomas Kador, Associate Professor in Creative Health and programme lead for Creative Health MASc at the UCL East Campus, has selected A Year in a Field directed by Christopher Morris.
Thomas says:
"A Year in a Field, with its central protagonist being a prehistoric standing stone, had a natural appeal to me, as someone with a background in archaeology. However, my current educational and research practice focuses on health, wellbeing and how we make sense of the world through the material things that surround us. This is pretty much the role of the standing stone at the centre of the film. It is a constant presence that allows us – with the help of film maker Christoper Morris – to see everything else around it changing; the daylight, the seasons, the weather, the environment and the wider world.
The film is not really about archaeology or even the past but a meditation on the contemporary world we inhabit and the different temporalities that frequently rub up against one another. From the perspective of the stone – firmly rooted in the past – we can observe the fast-paced and drastic environmental and social changes taking place in the world. This to me highlights how a deep historical perspective is essential for coming to terms with our current condition and ultimately perhaps even offering opportunities to challenge and address some of the most difficult problems that we face.”

A Year in a Field will be screened at 6.15pm and introduced by Thomas Kador. The run time is 1 hour 26 minutes. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Director Christopher Morris. Doors open at 6pm.

About the film
BAFTA-winning documentarian Christopher Morris films a field near his home in Cornwall every day from the Winter Solstice 2020 to the Winter Solstice 2021.
The result is a thoughtful, meditative documentary that reflects on the passage of time and humans' relationship with the natural world. It is a quiet call to action for the viewer to reflect on their impact on the environment.
“For all the majesty of big budget nature documentaries, spending A Year In A Field has yielded wonders for this modest but moving documentary that makes its point without slapping you round the face with messages.” - City AM
“Beautifully shot, with a richly layered sound design, the film meditates on the passage of time through its appreciation of nature, highlighting the subtle changes of the seasons, but also the need to act in order to battle man-made changes that will forever change our planet.” - Sheffield Doc Fest
