UCL’s professional development for early career teachers renewed by DfE

16 January 2025

The UK government’s Department for Education (DfE) has confirmed UCL IOE as a lead provider for the new Early Career Teacher Entitlement (ECTE), commencing in September 2025.

Primary School Teacher

The DfE first appointed IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education and Society, as a lead provider of the Early Career Framework (ECF) in 2021. Based in the faculty’s Center for Educational Leadership, the programme works with partner schools nationwide to equip teachers with impactful, evidence-informed professional development while they are in the early stages of their career.

UCL’s programme contributes to fostering high-quality teaching practices during the start of teacher’s careers, drawing on both university and schools-based evidence, leading to better student learning outcomes.

Having supported over 18,000 teachers since 2021, UCL will continue to contribute to the growth and retention of high-quality teachers across England.

In 2023 Ofsted evaluated IOE's delivery of the Framework, rating the programme as ‘Outstanding’ and noting exceptional participant satisfaction rates.
