Consultancy Lunch and Learns

We will be running our courses via MS Teams, please register in the normal way.

UCL Consultants (UCLC) are offering a series of information sessions around conducting consultancy via UCLC.

Covering areas such as an overview of consulting at UCL, proposal development and budgeting.

Join us to find out more about UCL Consultants and how we work across UCL to support staff engaging in non-research services.

Introduction to UCL Consultants

This session is the first of a series, which are being offered as a tool to support academics in undertaking consultancy work. We will cover:

  • Who can undertake consultancy.
  • The approvals process.
  • Basics of fees and costing, and other topics.

Length: These one hour sessions run every other month.

Financial Awareness

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Articulate Departmental policy and fees.
  • List typical commercial budget line items.
  • Commercial pricing – the importance of commercial pricing and how rates are determined.
  • Consider the importance of payment schedule design in cashflow and risk management.

Length: These one hour sessions run quarterly.

This session would be beneficial for:
Permanent UCL academic staff who would like to understand how to construct a commercial budget and are currently leading on projects through UCLC or who would like to do so.

This covers projects that span both Consultancy and Bespoke Short Courses.

Stakeholder Management

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Articulate the importance of stakeholder engagement and how this can affect the success of a project.
  • Understand what we mean by the term stakeholders and who may be identified as a stakeholder.
  • Map key project stakeholders (interest vs influence).
  • Categorise key stakeholders in relation to communications planning.

Length: These 90 minute sessions run quarterly.

This session would be beneficial for:
Permanent UCL academic staff which are looking to engage with UCLC to undertake consultancy and would like to understand more about managing stakeholders.

This covers projects that span both Consultancy and Bespoke Short Courses.

Client Engagement

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Articulate the key factors in building and maintaining client relationships.
  • Understand client hurdles and how this links to project success and the possibility of further work.
  • Understand client deadlines and how this should influence programme management and time management.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of differences between business/industry and academic language.

Length: These one hour sessions run quarterly.

This session would be beneficial for:
Permanent UCL academic staff who would like to explore the importance of good client communications in the success of projects. You would also be currently leading on projects through UCLC or due to do so.

This covers projects that span both Consultancy and Bespoke Short Courses.

Proposal Development

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the different types and purpose of procurement processes.
  • Define what we mean by the term ‘Requirements’ and how to identify them.
  • Understand the importance of identifying risk and how to consider its effects throughout.
  • Identify how to develop a great consultancy resume.

Length: Two hour sessions, running quarterly.

This session would be beneficial for:

  • Academic staff currently leading or working projects through UCLC.
  • Academic staff who would like to learn more about the development of robust technical proposals.

This covers projects that span both consultancy and bespoke short courses.
