The Future of Referendums in the UK

11 July 2018

In October 2017 the Constitution Unit established the Independent Commission on Referendums to review the role and conduct of referendums in the UK. The Commission met over eight months, took evidence, deliberated, and has now produced a detailed report containing comprehensive recommendations.

At this seminar, held to mark the report's launch, the Chair, Research Director and members of the Commission will discuss the recommendations and how they were reached, and consider what can now be done to take the proposals forward and thereby improve the future practice of referendums.

Full details of the commission and its work can be found on the commission web page.

Speakers:

  • Sir Joe Pilling, Chair of the Commission
  • Dr Alan Renwick, Research Director for the Commission
  • Jenny Watson CBE, former Chair of the Electoral Commission 2009-15
  • Deborah Mattinson, pollster and co-founder of BritainThinks

Chair: Prof Robert Hazell, UCL Constitution Unit
