Parliamentary Reform

Public Seminars 2010-11

Natascha Engel MP (Chair, Backbench Business Committee)

Date: Wednesday 17 November, 1.00pm
Venue: Council Room, The Constitution Unit

Natascha Engel, Labour MP for North East Derbyshire and Chair of the Backbench Business Committee, will give a public seminar on the topic of parliamentary reform and the work of her committee. Natascha was elected as the first ever Chair of the newly established Committee on 22 June 2010. The Committee is responsible for scheduling debates on 35 days during the current session of Parliament. These days will be devoted to backbench business and at least 27 of them will be debates in the main Chamber of the House of Commons. The establishment of the Committee is an important step towards the creation of a more independent House of Commons. You can read all about on their website at the link below.

Our own Meg Russell first recommended a Backbench Business Committee after a 3-year research project studying the Governance of Parliament. You can read about the project and the report authored by Meg Russell and Akash Paun at the links below. We also sent out a press release when the committee was announced.
