Oluwaseun is currently studying Computer Science MSc at UCL and will graduate in 2025.
1) What's your background?
I am originally from Nigeria, where I completed my secondary education before moving to England at the age of 16. Upon arriving in the UK, I pursued an International Foundation Programme (IFP) and subsequently earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Following my studies, I worked for a year in the water industry as a Project Engineering Manager, focusing on wastewater treatment plants. This experience gave me valuable insights into project management and engineering in a real-world setting.
2) Why did you choose to study Computer Science at UCL?
After living in Newcastle and studying at Northumbria University, I felt that I needed a new challenge and a change of pace. Although Newcastle is a charming city, it’s relatively small, and I wanted to immerse myself in a more dynamic environment.
I was also working in Manchester, which gave me a taste of the vibrant tech scene in larger cities. UCL stood out to me not only because of its prestigious reputation but also because of its location in London—a global hub for technology and innovation.
The opportunity to learn from leading experts in the field of Computer Science at UCL was too good to pass up, and I knew it would provide the exposure and resources necessary to advance my career.
3) What were the highlights of your CS programme?
One of the most memorable experiences during my time at UCL was building a web application called MotionPinout, which is now used by a company and was even featured on the BBC. I also thoroughly enjoyed modules in Machine Learning and Database Management, which have become crucial to my career.
Another standout aspect was the Project Management module taught by Mr. Clive Vassell. His lectures were particularly engaging and left a lasting impression on me, enhancing my ability to manage complex projects effectively.
4) What were the highlights of your time generally at UCL?
Living in London was both exciting and challenging. Coming from a smaller city, I found the social life in London to be vibrant and full of opportunities, although it was quite expensive. The diversity and richness of experiences available in London—from cultural events to networking opportunities—made my time at UCL incredibly rewarding.
5) What industry and career opportunities did you get access to on your programme?
During my time at UCL, I was exposed to numerous tech companies and industry leaders, which significantly boosted my career prospects. Currently, I am developing a proof-of-concept mobile app for IBM, a project that would not have been possible without the knowledge and experience I gained from my master’s.
The connections I made and the practical skills I developed at UCL were instrumental in advancing my career in tech.
6) What did you write your dissertation on?
My dissertation focused on incentivising recycling behaviour through gamification using a mobile application. I developed a proof-of-concept app that aimed to make recycling more engaging and accessible by incorporating game-like elements.
This project was particularly fulfilling as I was the sole developer, which allowed me to fully immerse myself in the technical and creative aspects of the work.
7) How did you manage your workload, and what advice would you give to prospective students in terms of being successful and making the most of the opportunities at UCL?
Managing my workload was all about interaction and seeking feedback. I regularly engaged with my course mates, professors, PhD students, and even UCL research assistants. They were all very supportive and provided invaluable insights that helped me refine my work.
My advice to prospective students is to take full advantage of the resources available at UCL—don’t hesitate to ask for help, and be proactive in managing your time and responsibilities.
8) How easy was it to settle in? How did you find studying in the UK?
UCL made the move smooth by offering various resources and support systems, such as orientation events and access to a vibrant student community. Joining UCL was less about overcoming cultural challenges and more about integrating into a much larger, more diverse academic and social environment.
I appreciated the chance to meet new people from all over the world, which broadened my perspectives and enriched my experience. While I didn’t face the challenges typical of international students adjusting to a new country, settling into London’s fast-paced life and higher living costs required some adaptation.
However, the city’s incredible opportunities—both academic and social—made it a worthwhile and fulfilling experience.
9) Where are you working now, and what are your career goals? How did your programme help you achieve this?
My goal has always been to secure a position in the tech industry, and UCL has been instrumental in helping me achieve this. The work experience opportunities and top-notch content provided by the program have equipped me with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in my career.
UCL’s emphasis on practical, real-world applications of computer science has been particularly beneficial as I continue to develop my professional portfolio.
10) Why would you recommend this course?
The quality of education is unparalleled, with expert faculty members and a curriculum that is both challenging and rewarding. The networking opportunities, combined with the vibrant atmosphere of London, create an ideal environment for personal and professional growth.
UCL has truly prepared me for a successful career in tech, and I am confident that it can do the same for others.
