Maximizing Phylogenetic Diversity

Dr. Nick Goldman, EMBL- European Bioinformatics Institute, UK

Tuesday 29th March, Location: Gavin de Beer LT, Time: 17:00

'Phylogenetic diversity' (PD) means the total amount of evolution represented by the phylogeny (evolutionary tree) relating a given set of organisms.  As time passes, PD tends to increase (sort of like entropy?); but extinctions lead to a reduction in PD. Conservation biologists are particularly interested in trying to reduce the loss of PD.  Can we make choices that maximize PD? This talk will review some algorithmic results around questions regarding the maximization of phylogenetic diversity.
