The National Brain Appeal raises funds for The National Hospital and the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology.

Mission

The National Brain Appeal’s vision is to transform the lives of the millions of people affected by brain and neurological disorders. They do this by driving world-class innovation at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and the UCL Institute of Neurology – jointly know as Queen Square.

Since it was launched in 1984, the charity has contributed nearly £48million to innovative projects at Queen Square including £1.4million towards the creation of the UK’s first comprehensive Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases.

Since then, The National Brain Appeal has worked with Professor Michael Hanna and his team at the Centre to continue to raise funds to support our research programmes and to help train the next generation of scientists, nurses, physiotherapists and junior doctors. This includes funding:

  • Dedicated PhD projects for young doctors and scientists resulting in more accurate genetic diagnosis and improved treatments for some neuromuscular diseases.
  • A research programme undertaken by our physiotherapy team to understand the benefit of exercise for patients with neuromuscular diseases.
  • The first year's appointment of a clinical trials co-ordinator
  • The induction programme for the International Centre for Genomic Medicine in Neuromuscular Diseases (ICGNMD), and the appointment of a dedicated research manager for the programme

How you can help

CNMD runners team standing in Green Park after the 2022 10k race

On 14th July 2023, Professor Mike Hanna will be leading the CNMD Team and colleagues in running The ASICS London British 10k run in central London, to raise funds for the Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases. This is our 14th consecutive year participating in the event, and we are very proud of the fact that, over the years, our supporters have helped to raise over £140,000 for the Centre.

Our goal for 2024 is to raise £10,000 for The National Brain Appeal to support training at The Queen Square Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases.

If you would like to support the Team please visit our ‘’Just Giving’’ page:

We do hope you can help us to achieve that goal: any donation, no matter how small, will be gratefully received and will help make a very real difference. It is thanks to the generosity of individuals, grant-making trusts and companies, that the research projects and improvements in treatment at the CNMD have been made possible. Without this incredible support, many advances simply would not have happened.
