25 February 2025

Insights from neuroscience and psychology can help explain why people often feel stuck when trying to take climate action, explains the Climate Action Unit's Director in this video.

The aim of the UCL Climate Action Unit's work is to accelerate the uptake of climate action and the transition to net-zero across society.

Our way of working is underpinned by insights from neuroscience and psychology about how our brains engage with the subject of climate change.

These insights help explain why people often feel stuck when trying to take action, and what we can do to get unstuck.

These insights - and several of the principles of how the UCL Climate Action Unit works - are explained in a newly-released TED talk by Dr Kris De Meyer.

Breakthrough Sessions at TED

"Feeling stuck about climate change? Here's what to do" was recorded in October 2024 in Brussels, Belgium as part of a TED Countdown event on overcoming dilemmas in the green transition.

The two-day, invitation-only event was held at The EGG in Brussels, Belgium. The attendees were leaders from business, finance, policy, science, nonprofits and the arts.

Alongside the TED talk, the UCL Climate Action Unit delivered a 'Breakthrough' Session for invited professionals called 'Becoming a climate ‘unsticker’: how neuroscience can help you break through complex climate challenges.'

In this participatory workshop, Kris De Meyer and Lucy Hubble-Rose (Deputy Director of the UCL Climate Action Unit) shared several tools and approaches to help dozens of climate and environmental professionals seeking to overcome the barriers to taking action in their own professional contexts.
