Scientists and economists (such as authors of the IPCC reports on the impacts of climate change) have widely documented that the longer it takes to reduce emissions and become resilient, the more far-reaching and complex the risks of climate change will become.

In response to this, one of the Strategic Climate Risk Initiatives' priorities is to enable emerging leaders to build the capabilities to manage these risks in the future. The UCL Climate Action Unit plays a key role in the design and facilitation of leadership development work within the SCRI.

Some recent examples of this work are listed below:

Cohort 2040: a pilot leadership programme

From Spring 2023 to Summer 2024, the SCRI researched, designed and delivered a pilot leadership programme for emerging leaders in organisations working on climate change and nature challenges.

The focus of this leadership programme was to support participants in the development of skills, tools and insights from neuroscience which equip them to work toward enabling systems change when working on complex challenges.

The participants of the pilot cohort worked in a range of contexts, including UK government, sustainable business, academia and third sector organisations.

As part of the SCRI, the Climate Action Unit spent 6 months developing and testing novel approaches to leadership development with pioneers of the industry. Following this, the CAU and SCRI delivered the pilot Cohort 2040 programme from October 2023 to June 2024.
