Climate Ambassadors - the London Regional Hub

A programme funded by the Department for Education to help schools across England act on climate change

What is the Climate Ambassadors programme?

The Climate Ambassadors Programme is a Department for Education funded initiative to support education settings across England to address climate change. The programme focuses supporting all education settings to have a sustainability lead and climate action plan by the end of 2025, which is a goal in the DfE’s Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy.

The London regional hub

At the London Hub for the Climate Ambassadors Programme, we are cooperating with a range of stakeholders from across London to support and empower education settings to address climate change via a whole school approach. We know that while many education settings are keen to make climate action happen, they often lack the time and resources to do so.

In response to this, we are coordinating programmes to recruit, train and support Climate Ambassadors. The Ambassadors will in turn help education staff to implement climate action plans in school settings, thereby putting the DfE’s Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy into action.

What activities are happening?

We are running regular sessions for individuals who want to become Climate Ambassadors, as well as sessions for education settings who would like to be paired with a Climate Ambassador. To support anyone who attends our training and becomes a Climate Ambassador, we are developing a range of resources such as a six-step guide for producing a climate action plan.

Alongside this, we are working closely with several councils, education federations and other education-focused projects in London to develop a cohesive approach: one that integrates the Climate Ambassador role into the existing educational landscape. For example, we are currently exploring how to work with multi-academy trusts (MATs) and education federations.

How to get involved

We are recruiting Climate Ambassadors and education settings on an ongoing basis.

If you are interested in signing-up to the programme as a Climate Ambassador, are an education setting who would like support developing your climate action plan, or an education federation / MAT who would like to hear more, please email us at: climateambassadors_london@ucl.ac.uk

A national initiative

A map of the regional hubs in the Climate Ambassadors programme

The Climate Ambassadors Programme is funded by the Department for Education as part of its Sustainability and Climate Change strategy. The strategy states that "by 2025 all education settings in England are expected to have a designated sustainability lead and a climate action plan."

London is one of nine regional hubs across England. The national programme is led by the University of Reading. Regional hubs will work with each other, and also with a range of 'sister projects' and organisations outside of the university sector.
