Online Dutch Course - Business

Business Dutch is a tutor-supported online language course aimed at learners with no or little prior knowledge of Dutch. It enables you to build up a reading knowledge of Dutch sufficient to cope with reading the business pages of Dutch and Flemish newspapers and magazines. The course is available worldwide and delivered via online course materials, supported by weekly one-to-one tutorials. The course is developed and taught by highly qualified and experienced UCL Centre for Languages and International Education tutors. Lessons are via Teams/Skype and can be scheduled depending on a learner's individual needs.

For general information about our online Dutch courses, the next starting dates and how to apply, go to the Online Dutch home page.

Course duration

The course runs over a 20-week period from your chosen starting date. In exceptional circumstance, a short extension may be agreed with your tutor.

Prerequisite for entry

The course requires no prior knowledge of the language.

Aims and objectives

At the end of the course, you will have:

  • the ability to read Business Dutch
  • Insight into the business environment in the Low Countries
  • good self-study skills.

You will also receive a UCL completion certificate. The Business Dutch Study Guide  gives further details regarding the course. If you have any questions about the course, please email the course tutor, Dr An (a.castangia@ucl.ac.uk), or Paul, the course administrator (p.warren@ucl.ac.uk).

Course content

The course consists of two parts. The first part is a general module consisting of 20 chapters. It uses English as its medium of instruction and comprises general texts on economic and social aspects of the Low Countries. Part two is a specialist module of ten chapters. This part is entirely in Dutch and covers more specialised texts on finance, business, entrepreneurship, and insurance. All text material is authentic. The activities and exercises are designed to develop the language skills of listening and reading. Some exercises are self-scoring and self-correcting, but the majority needs to be send to the course tutor for feedback. An important feature of the course are the weekly tutorials between you and your tutor. They allow you to interact directly with your tutor and to get feedback, advice and guidance. The course is further linked to an online reference grammar of Dutch, which provides additional self-access exercise materials.

Course Delivery

The course is delivered via an online learning environment. All course materials can be downloaded for offline use. After you complete the course, you continue to have access to the online course materials. All the course work is corrected by your personal tutor. The course includes weekly individual tutorials via Teams/Skype. Note that these sessions do not take place at a set time. You agree with your tutor for each individual lesson on a day and time that suits you both. You need internet access and a computer (desktop, laptop or tablet) and webcam.
