How does it work?

MA in the Reception of the Classical World

An MA student needs to complete the following elements (120 credits total)


(1) the MA core course CLAS0116 (Approaches to the Reception of the Classical World): 40 credits

  • This course is compulsory.

(2) two further MA courses (modules) at 40 credits each from an approved list

  • Two 0.5 modules at 20 credits may be substituted for one full module: a student can take six 20-credit modules, or any combination of 20 and 40 credit modules

(3) the MA dissertation (60 credits)


Approved MA courses

  • Students may choose courses from the list of dedicated courses in Reception provided at UCL.
  • With the approval of the programme director, students may take courses in Classical languages, literature and culture, archaeology and history which are on offer in the Intercollegiate MA in Classics.
  • One module (40 credits) may be taken from a different MA programme (subject to the approval of the Programme Director and by permission of the relevant department): for example, Modern Languages, English, Modern History, Art History, etc.

Part-time (two-year) MA programme

As above, subject to the following

  • Two of the three MA courses (or 80 credits) are taken in the first year.
  • One MA course (or 40 credits) is taken in the second year.
  • The MA dissertation is written in the second year.

Time management

  • Each course involves one two-hour seminar or class per week for two terms.
  • A full-time student therefore has six hours of class per week.
  • Courses run from October to March (two 10-week terms), and coursework must be handed in by 1 June at the latest.
  • Dissertations are written between 1 June and 15 September.
