How does it work?

MA Classics

An MA student needs to complete the following elements (120 credits total)

  • the MA core course M950 (sources and methods): term 1 only

This course is compulsory, but has no credit attached.

  • three MA courses (modules) at 40 credits each

Two 0.5 modules at 20 credits may be substituted for one full module: a student can take six 20-credit modules, or any combination of 20 and 40 credit modules

  • the MA dissertation (60 credits)

Compulsory elements

  1. Students need to take the MA core course.
  2. Students must take 40 credits (one 40-credit course or two-20 credit courses) in a language-testing module: either a text-based course where the texts are read in Greek or Latin, or a language course.

Optional courses

  • Remaining modules may consist of a mixture of courses in Classical languages, literature and culture, archaeology and history from across the Ancient World syllabus.
  • One module (40 credits) may be taken from a different MA programme at UCL or the University of London (students need to get the permission of the programme director for this): for example, Modern Languages, English, Modern History, Art History, etc.

Part-time (two-year) MA programme

As above, subject to the following

  • Two of the three MA courses (or 80 credits) are taken in the first year.
  • One MA course (or 40 credits) is taken in the second year.
  • The MA dissertation is written in the second year.
